Kazuhito Ichii

Kazuhito Ichii is a Professor and Vice Director of the Center for Environmental Remote Sensing (CEReS), Chiba University, Japan. He received his Ph.D. from Nagoya University in 2002 and previously held research positions at NASA Ames Research Center, Fukushima University, and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). His research focuses on understanding terrestrial ecosystem dynamics and carbon and water cycles by integrating satellite remote sensing, ground-based observations, and ecosystem modeling. In particular, his group develops high-frequency land-surface products from geostationary satellites, including surface reflectance, vegetation indices, land surface temperature, albedo, solar radiation, evapotranspiration, and gross primary productivity. He currently leads JSPS Core-to-Core GEOLAND-NET project, through which he collaborates with NASA Ames Research Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and other international partners. K. Ichii has served as Chair of AsiaFlux since 2021 and as Co-Chair of the AO-GEO (Asia-Oceania Group on Earth Observations) Task Group on Carbon and Greenhouse Gas. He also served as a Coordinating Lead Author of Chapter 2 of the IPBES Global Assessment Report. His broader research interests include regional carbon budgets, ecosystem responses to drought and heat stress, and the integration of multiple geostationary satellites for global terrestrial monitoring.
